Sample Timelines

M.Sc. students
Before 2nd week of August
Even if you have not arrived in Vancouver, consult with Research Supervisor about choice of Term 1 Content courses. Must register for Term 1 Content courses before the end of the 2nd week of August.

 

Year 1
Before or soon after start of September
Meet with Research Supervisor to discuss responsibilities, potential projects, career goals, etc.
Before 1st week of December
Consult with Research Supervisor about choice of Term 2 Content courses. Must register for Term 2 Content courses before December 1.

 

Before end of March
Establish Research Advisory Committee and meet. Discuss research proposal outline (developed in CELL 501) and continue to develop a final thesis research proposal.

 

Before end of August
M.Sc. students must have completed a minimum 9 credits of coursework. If necessary, consult with Research Supervisor about choice of courses in year 2. All elective course work must be completed within 24 months of initial registration.

 

Must have meeting of Advisory Committee to review course grades and discuss research project. Thesis research proposal must be approved Advisory Committee before end of first year in the program. Forward report of committee meeting to Program Coordinator.

 

Year 2
Before end of April
Have meeting of Research Advisory Committee. Review course grades and assess research plan and progress. Discuss transfer to Ph.D. Transfer into Ph.D. is normally after 1 year of study at the Master’s level and is not permitted after completion of the 2nd year. Forward report of meeting to Program Coordinator.

 

Before end of August

Students transferring to the Ph.D. program must have completed a minimum of 9 credits of coursework at the 500-level or above, all of which must be of first-class standing. Transfer to the Ph.D. program is not permitted after more than 24 months in the M.Sc. program.

 

Present ‘Cells’ seminar in year 2 (or early in year 3).

 

Year 3

For students who have not transferred to the Ph.D. program, have meeting of Advisory Committee – discuss outline of thesis and obtain permission to write thesis. This meeting typically takes place 3 months before student intends to defend thesis. Forward report of meeting to Program Coordinator.

 

Ph.D. students
Before 2nd week of August

Thesis research proposal must be approved Advisory Committee before end of second year in the program. Forward report of meeting to Program Coordinator. 2) Request permission to take Comprehensive Exam. Ph.D. students are required to pass the Comprehensive Exam within 24 – 36 months of the start of their program. Forward report of committee meeting to Program Coordinator.

 

Students who entered the Ph.D. program from a B.Sc. must have completed a minimum 12 credits of coursework with a first class average, of which at least 9 credits must be at the 500-level or above and at least 9 credits must be of first class standing.

 

Present ‘Cells’ seminar in year 2 (or early in year 3).

 

Year 3
Early in year 3
Establish Examining Committee for Comprehensive Exam. Set date for pre-comps meeting to establish topics for the exam. Comprehensive Exam should take place no later than March of year 3, in case re-examination is necessary.

 

Years 4 – 6
Advisory Committee meetings are REQUIRED annually to discuss progress and refine research plan. Forward report of meetings to Program Coordinator.

 

Present second ‘Cells’ seminar in year 4 (or early year 5).

 

Advisory Committee meeting for permission to write up doctoral thesis. This meeting typically takes place early in year 5. Forward report of meeting to Program Coordinator.

 

Write thesis and prepare for public defense of thesis.
